MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont lawmakers are being invited to Montpelier the week after Thanksgiving to get a preview of the issues they’ll be facing when they reconvene in January.

A daylong legislative briefing set for Tuesday, Dec. 1, will feature welcoming remarks from legislative leaders, followed by presentations from administration officials about the budget challenges Vermont is facing.

Increasing Medicaid costs are the main cause of a budget gap projected at nearly $70 million for the fiscal year that starts next July 1.

But before they get to that, lawmakers will be asked to grapple with a Medicaid shortfall approaching $40 million for the current fiscal year.

At the Dec. 1 briefing, the legislators will also hear from Education Secretary Rebecca Holcombe about challenges in education.
