EDISON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a North Carolina man fleeing police in New Jersey tried shooting at officers, but ended up shooting his own backseat.

Police charged Jesse Namotka with attempted murder, carjacking and related offenses in Saturday’s incident.

Investigators say the Sylva, North Carolina, resident had commandeered his cousin’s Jeep when she leaped from the vehicle in Edison. She told police Namotka took her against her will.

Police say he hit another car after, but kept driving. Officers gave chase until he eventually lost control of the Jeep and surrendered to police.

Officers say they found several bullet holes from a revolver in the backseat, indicating that he tried to shoot at police cruisers.

It’s unclear if he has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
