SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - The Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse has a new arrival - a 13-year-old male African lion.

M’Wasi was acquired from the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo and can now be seen in Lion Corridor in the Social Building area of the zoo. He will be companion to the zoo’s 15-year-old lioness, Kierha.

Zoo officials are planning to exhibit the pair together.

M’Wasi is Swahili for “rebel.” He was born in 2002 at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and arrived at the Bronx Zoo in 2005. He sired three litters during his time there, including the first cub born at the Bronx Zoo in 31 years.

Animals are regularly transferred between zoos through a shared management effort for threatened or endangered animal populations.
