GARDENA, Calif. (AP) - A massive fire at a tire shop choked a Los Angeles County neighborhood with black smoke and noxious fumes before crews knocked down the flames.

Residents tell KABC-TV they heard loud explosions as the fire ripped through the business in Gardena shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday.

County Fire Deputy Chief Anthony Whittle says crews protected two adjacent businesses despite a strong wind that pushed flames in that direction. The fire was out in less than an hour.

No injuries are reported. The tire shop was gutted but no damage estimate was immediately available.

The cause is under investigation.
