BRENTWOOD, Calif. (AP) - San Francisco Bay Area authorities say scam artists are trying to sell fake gold bars in a department store parking lot.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://sfg.ly/1QI9f3U ) Wednesday that Brentwood police say there have been at least two instances of scam artists trying to sell fraudulent gold at a Kohl’s department store.

One was earlier this month and another was in May.

Police say suspects with the gold approached unsuspecting patrons and tell a woeful tale of how they were down on their luck and needed to sell the precious metal bars for cash.

Authorities say that in one incident the scam artists, who work in groups of two or three, were reported to have threatened a buyer with violence to force the sale, the newspaper reported.

Police warned that scams are especially prevalent during the holiday season
