SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island woman has pleaded not guilty to charges she took thousands from immigrants who entered the country illegally, but didn’t work to get them visas or citizenship papers.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1PNNr6G ) 48-year-old Jexcy Solórzano-Cedeno was indicted Tuesday on charges of scheme to defraud, grand larceny as a hate crime and related offenses.

Investigators say she was preying on immigrants because she didn’t have the credentials to help them. Prosecutors say she led them to believe she was working with police or immigration attorneys. She allegedly cheated her victims out of as much as $5,000.

It’s not clear if she has an attorney.
