CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A woman and her fiance have married in a Carolinas Medical Center hospital room so the bride’s terminally ill father would be there to give her away.

Multiple media outlets report Kaila Kirby married Daniel Purdue Wednesday at the bedside of her terminally ill father, Jubal Kirby. She and Purdue had planned on getting married in July. But in recent days, Jubal’s lung disease worsened, and it became clear he may not live until then.

Hospital case manager Cyndi Richi says she learned of the plans Wednesday morning. In only two hours, she bought flowers and a cake.

The ceremony was held at noon. The bride touched her father’s arm as she and Purdue were pronounced husband and wife.

Jubal clapped by patting his hand weakly on the sheet by his side.
