A Chicago area policeman hailed as a hero gunned down in the line of duty actually committed suicide, according to an investigation.

According to WFLD-TV in Chicago, investigators will say at a news conference Wednesday that Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, 52, killed himself for personal and professional reasons.

The Fox affiliate cited anonymous sources and did not elaborate on what the personal issues were.

Gliniewicz, a 30-year veteran of the Fox Lake police and an Army Reserve sergeant, was found shot to death Sept. 1 after he had reported pursuing three suspects in the area about 50 miles northwest of Chicago.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office would only say officially that it would hold a press conference at 10 a.m. CST “to provide significant new information” in the case.
