NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer says more needs to be done for minority and women-owned businesses that are trying to obtain city contracts.
Stringer released a report Wednesday grading 32 city agencies based on their spending and payouts.
Stringer says women and minorities are largely shut out of the city’s $13.8 billion procurement budget.
Although the city’s overall score rose since last year, Stringer says there is still more work to be done.
He wants city agencies to create more mentoring programs for the minority-owned businesses.
Stringer says two thirds of the agencies graded also did not report information about subcontractors, even though that is required.
A spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio says the administration has made an unprecedented effort to prioritize awards to minority businesses.
