PITTSBURGH (AP) - Officials say the government and a Pittsburgh-based company that runs more than 100 for-profit schools are close to settling a multibillion-dollar lawsuit.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Comber said Wednesday they’ve reached a final agreement on “nearly all the terms of the settlement.” But he says some of the 13 states that joined the federal government and two former employees in suing Education Management Corp. haven’t agreed to the terms.
The agreement would settle the original 2007 lawsuit claiming the company knowingly violated education regulations while certifying that it was complying with those rules so it could continue to collect federal student financial aid. Comber says it would also settle three other lawsuits.
An attorney for the company says he has nothing to add to Comber’s comments.
