President Obama on Wednesday announced that he plans to deploy 300 troops to Cameroon to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations.

In a letter released by the White House, Mr. Obama said 90 personnel had already been deployed to the region and would be armed for self defense, the Agence France Presse reported.

The deployments are likely part of the administration’s growing efforts to combat Boko Haram militants, who have expanded their operations beyond their traditional base in Nigeria.
