LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A warrant has been issued for a 42-year-old man accused of burglarizing an 82-year-old woman’s Las Cruces-area home and then forcing her to drive with him in her SUV before he stole the vehicle.
The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department said the warrant accuses Andrew Serna of false imprisonment, residential burglary, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and tampering with evidence. He remained at large Wednesday.
The incident Monday began when the woman noticed a man leaving her home as she mowed her lawn. He told her he’d scared off a burglar, and they left in her SUV, supposedly heading for the sheriff’s department. She initially drove but he later took over driving.
She got away at a convenience store in Mesilla (may-SEE’-uh), and her SUV was found abandoned Tuesday.
