ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Former members of a now-disbanded fraternity chapter at the University of Michigan say they raised $10,000 for charity by continuing a muddy tradition despite objections from the school and the national fraternity.

The Ann Arbor News reports (https://bit.ly/1RcncUs ) the money raised through Saturday’s 82nd annual Mud Bowl outside the former Sigma Alpha Epsilon house goes to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Water dumped in the yard made for muddy play at the touch football game, which is held each year in conjunction with the Ann Arbor school’s homecoming events. It was at risk of ending, but some former SAE members called the “Flying Eagles” decided to host it as independent students.

Officials from the university’s Interfraternity Council and Office of Greek Life encouraged their members not to participate.
