CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Chattanooga has launched Internet service at 10 gigabits per second through its municipal broadband network.

The city has branded itself as “Gig City” since it first launched a 1-gigabit service to all electric power utility EPB’s customers in 2009.

The new service is available to all 170,000 households and businesses within EPB’s 600-square-mile area, and residential service will cost $299 per month.

Only 100 people signed up for the 1 gigabit service when it originally cost $350 per month. But subscribers multiplied to 4,700 through the end of last year once the rate was slashed to $70. Another 55,000 customers had signed up for the cheaper 100-megabit service.

A study by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga found that the network has generated more than 2,800 new jobs.
