LADSON, S.C. (AP) - The Highway Patrol has charged a man with felony driving under the influence after his passenger died in a motorcycle crash.
Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelly Kraus told local media that 28-year-old Ashleigh Spofford of Ladson died in the crash Tuesday morning on U.S. 78.
Lance Cpl. Hannah Wimberly said that 27-year-old Mua Tau Tuala of Ladson was taken to the Charleston County jail after leaving the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital.
Wimberly says Tuala says is also charged with reckless homicide. It was not clear if he has a lawyer.
Investigators say Tuala was driving on the raised concrete media when an SUV pulled out and collided with the motorcycle. The people in the SUV were not hurt.
Wimberly says the wreck is still under investigation.
