RACINE, Wis. (AP) - The owner of a runaway drone that crashed at the Racine airport last weekend has come forward.
The four-propeller drone was found on a taxiway at Batten International Airport on Sunday morning.
Airport Manager David Mann tells the Racine Journal Times (https://bit.ly/1ZJpFMf ) that a man, who he wouldn’t name, came to the airport Thursday and told him the drone was his. He says the drone was making its first flight when it flew away from the owner’s back yard and would not respond to its radio controls.
Mann says there apparently was an error involving the drone’s GPS system.
While it’s illegal to fly a drone within five miles of an airport without permission, Mann says he spoke with the Federal Aviation Administration, and there won’t be any charges.
