AGAWAM, Mass. (AP) - A mother has been awarded $20,000 on behalf of two of her children after she was accidentally shot in the face by a Massachusetts police officer while pregnant.

Britteney Miles, of Agawam, filed the lawsuit in federal court in April. WWLP-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1G8R7g0 ) a federal judge approved a settlement Thursday. The settlement is for emotional distress for the children and the money will go into investment accounts.

Miles was shot in the face and chin on May 5, 2012 when then-Agawam police officer Danielle Petrangelo accidentally fired her weapon through the door. Police were responding to Miles’ apartment building for a possible break-in.

Petrangelo was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing and left the department.

Miles is still suing the town for $1.5 million in federal court.
