GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) - The city of Grand Island has issued a “no dogs allowed” policy in some city vehicles because the City Council received a more than $100 cleaning bill for one truck after a city attorney transported his pooch in it.

The $110 bill was for a vacuum and shampoo of a public works department truck, the Grand Island Independent (https://bit.ly/1NMthcz ) reported.

The truck is part of a small fleet available for checkout by city employees needing to attend off-site meetings or out-of-town conferences.

City Attorney Bob Sivick acknowledged that he checked out the truck in late September for a continuing legal education seminar in Omaha. He took his small Jack Russell terrier, Buddy, along and dropped the dog off with a caretaker in Omaha.

Sivick said Buddy has been riding in city loaner vehicles for four years and has never been in the doghouse before.

Buddy has a dog bed in Sivick’s office at City Hall, where he sleeps if Sivick works late or on weekends. Sivick said his office isn’t covered with dog hair.

“I’m not saying that he wouldn’t leave a hair on that seat, but I don’t think this is a situation where over $100 had to be used to clean this vehicle,” Sivick said.

Nonetheless, Public Works Director John Collins said, pets are no longer allowed in vehicles used to take people to executive-level meetings.
