MILWAUKEE (AP) - Workers will vote Wednesday on a tentative three-year contract between the Milwaukee County Transit System and its bus drivers’ union.
During the months of negotiations, Amalgamated Transit Union leaders objected to the proposed hiring of 45 part-time workers who wouldn’t pay into the pension system. But the transit system said the union was trying to have it both ways - complaining about excessive overtime then opposing the hiring of part-timers.
The drivers went on strike for three days during Summerfest in July. After they overwhelmingly rejected a county offer Oct. 5, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele dropped the part-time provision.
ATU Local 998 President James Macon says he’ll advise his members to approve the deal.
Abele says the contract provides continuity and stability for drivers and riders.
