HANOVER, N.H. (AP) - There’s no shortage of sophisticated scientific equipment at Dartmouth College, but sometimes, old-fashioned works just fine.

The National Weather Service recently presented the Ivy League school with an “Honored Institution Award” for 125 years of uninterrupted weather monitoring and reporting.

Alan Goldblatt, a teaching lab technician in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, says the school has been converting to electronic systems, but still just dips a ruler into a water collection tube to measure rainfall. Doing so keeps the data from the last 125 years continuous with new data.

Dartmouth is one of longest-running observation sites of the 8,700 locations that feed data to 122 National Weather Service forecast offices.
