LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A homemade quilt celebrating Lincoln’s fire department will soon be on display for the community, thanks in part to the help of a former firefighter.
The quilt includes T-shirt designs from each of the city’s 14 fire stations. It will be unveiled on Nov. 6 at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It will be on display for about a month, the Lincoln Journal Star reported (https://bit.ly/1Xd4iR6 ).
The project was led by Rick Campos, a fire inspector and former firefighter who realized he had gradually collected T-shirts from several of Lincoln’s fire stations. Campos and his wife, also a firefighter, had been stationed around the city.
Campos decided to make a project out of it. He worked with Lincoln Fire and Rescue Capt. Dan Ripley to get T-shirt designs from each of the city’s 14 fire stations into the same size and material. Two members from a nearby quilting club then sewed it together. The project took about a year and a half to complete.
“It’s just really great,” Campos said of the completed quilt. “The quality is amazing, I couldn’t be happier. It needs to be displayed … I wanted it to be something that everyone can enjoy.”
Once its stint at the museum, the quilt will be moved to an undermined location that firefighters and their families can visit.
