MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Attorney General’s office says one of America’s largest propane retailers has been ordered to pay more than $700,000 to settle consumer protection claims against it.

Suburban Propane will pay more than $311,000 to its Vermont customers, $200,000 to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and $200,000 in civil penalties to the state.

Attorney General Bill Sorrell found the company was slow to remove tanks and issue refunds to customers who ended service with the company. The attorney general says Suburban also improperly collected a gross receipts tax for fuel and a regulatory fee that is not allowed under Vermont law.
