DETROIT (AP) - Foundations are launching a $1.5 million project to build the vocabularies of low-income preschool children in two Detroit neighborhoods.
The goal is to get approximately 150 families in twice-weekly activities in the Brightmoor neighborhood and in southwest Detroit. The National Center for Families Learning will provide expertise in literacy and family learning over two years.
The strategy includes vocabulary-themed family events at parks and libraries and weekly word activities at salons, grocery stories and churches.
The foundations are the PNC Foundation, the Skillman Foundation and the Max and Marjorie Fisher Foundation. The announcement was made Tuesday.
PNC bank regional vice president Ric DeVore says, “Words unlock success for children.”
