OGDEN, Utah (AP) - Wildlife officials say an owl has died after being hit by a semi-truck in Utah and severely injured.

The Stand Examiner reports (https://bit.ly/1ideXM7 ) that the truck driver hit the great horned owl Saturday night on Interstate 15. According to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, the driver found the bird still alive and stuck in the truck’s grill when he stopped for breakfast Sunday.

Workers from the Utah Department of Natural Resources removed the owl from the grill and at first expected it to recover.

But the Oregon Wildlife Rehabilitation Center says the bird’s injuries were severe, including broken wings and head trauma. They put the bird to sleep after its condition worsened Sunday evening.

Wildlife specialist Dalyn Erickson says it is amazing that the owl survived as long as it did.
