DETROIT (AP) - The sale of the former American Motors headquarters in Detroit has been cancelled after the winning bidder in the county’s tax foreclosure auction missed a payment deadline.

Wayne County Deputy Treasurer Eric Sabree says the blighted property’s sole bidder in last week’s auction failed to pay the $500 winning bid and $232,000 in summer taxes by 5 p.m. Monday.

Under standard protocol for commercial properties that fail to sell at the annual county auction, the 1.4 million square-foot facility will now be offered to the city of Detroit. It’s unclear whether the city wants the property, but Sabree says he plans to sit down with city officials to see what they want to do.

George Romney ran American Motors before becoming Michigan governor in 1963.
