WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after a donation jar containing more than $600 for a roadside police memorial was stolen from a Kent County grocery store.
WJAR-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1RBBXAv ) surveillance video from Roch’s Fruit and Produce in West Warwick shows a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt walk up to the counter Friday evening and leave with the jar.
Manager Therese Golick says customers had been donating money for the memorial for the past four weeks.
Kevin O’Connell, co-chairman for the West Warwick Police Memorial, says the thief took something from not only the police department but also the community.
Golick says the jar contained several $20 bills along with loose dollars and change.
The store, which planned to match patrons’ donations, will put out another jar in the coming days.
