HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Organizers say a new park in Hot Springs will be named in honor of City Manager David Watkins, who died unexpectedly this summer.

The new park will be built in the 800 block of Park Avenue where a motel once stood. Park planner Angie Gammill says that once it’s completed, the park will be known as The David F. Watkins Memorial Tunnel Park.

Gammill tells The Sentinel-Record (https://bit.ly/1N7y6vH ) that Watkins led the charge for the city to acquire the property and tear down the old motel. Watkins died in August after he was injured in a fall at his home.

Gammill says the park will be paid for through donations, fundraisers and grants. Plans for the park include a splash pad, a playground and an amphitheater for small music events.
