TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - The first sections of the roadway on the new Tappan Zee Bridge in New York have been installed.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/1MqxBy9 ) that parts of the roadway have been added on the northbound span where the new crossing curves toward Rockland.

The New York Thruway Authority says that 70 steel-reinforced road deck panels have been installed by constructors as of Monday.

Nearly 7,000 concrete road deck panels will be combined to form the driving surface for two crossings, each three miles long.

Executive Director Bob Megna says the installation is another sign of the project’s progress.

The $4 billion project is expected to handle an average of 138,000 cars daily. The first crossing is expected to open in December 2016.
