SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The family of a man fatally shot by Salt Lake City police last year outside a convenience store is filing a wrongful lawsuit against the city.

Attorneys for the family of 20-year-old Dillon Taylor allege in a lawsuit filed Wednesday that officer Bron Cruz was improperly trained in a “vicious culture and cycle of shoot-to-kill first.”

Prosecutors and an internal police review determined Cruz was justified in shooting in the August 2014 incident. Investigators relied heavily on video taken from a body camera worn by Cruz. Prosecutors said Cruz couldn’t have known Taylor was unarmed.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker says he is sympathetic to the Taylor family, but noted the officer was cleared of wrongdoing. Becker says city police officers are trained to handle these types of situations.
