PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The head of HealthSource RI, the state’s health insurance exchange, has been appointed as Rhode Island’s Medicaid director.

Anya Rader Wallack was praised Thursday by state Health and Human Services Secretary Elizabeth Roberts who said she made the health exchange “sustainable and responsive” to Rhode Island’s health care needs.

Gov. Gina Raimondo said officials must focus on improving outcomes for the 260,000 Rhode Islanders enrolled in Medicaid while also providing taxpayers and businesses with “more predictability.”

The governor said Wallack’s leadership in health policy will show Rhode Island is a national model for how states can achieve better outcomes and cut costs.

Officials say estimates show Rhode Island is on track to meet or exceed nearly all targets to save more than $70 million in Medicaid without cutting eligibility.
