Late-night talk show host Bill Maher and British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkings, two noted atheists, lamented “regressive leftists” who fail to understand they are anything but liberal when it comes to Islam.

Speaking to Mr. Dawkins on his HBO show “Real Time,” Mr. Maher Friday mocked the liberal notion “that somehow Islam and Muslims are this protected species, that if we talk about them at all or criticize them at all, it’s somehow hurting or humiliating muslims, and that’s a ridiculous idea,” Mediaite reported

“And it’s confused with racism as well,” Mr. Dawkins replied. “An incredible number of people think Islam is a race. And so they think that if you criticize Islam you’re being racist.”

Mr. Dawkins argued that Islam often gets a “free pass” from criticism because of the “terror of being thought racist.”

The two also lamented how overly PC and closed-minded college campuses have become.

“If you can’t speak your mind on a university campus where can you?” Mr. Dawkins asked, Mediaite reported. “That’s what universities are about. It’s about free speech, it’s about being exposed to ideas you haven’t met before, perhaps you’re hostile to. If you only ever get exposed to ideas that you agree with, what kind of a university would that be?”
