MESQUITE, Texas (AP) - A Dallas-area traffic stop has led to officers fatally shooting an armed driver who aimed a gun at himself before pointing the weapon at police.
Mesquite police say the incident happened before dawn Friday along a busy freeway. No officers were hurt.
Mesquite police Lt. Brian Parrish says 29-year-old Mario Martinez late Thursday night ran a red light, then drove through a stop sign. Officers chased the car, leading to a stop along Interstate 635. Police negotiated with the 29-year-old Martinez for more than an hour.
The driver got out of his car, pointed a gun at his head and then turned the weapon toward officers.
Parrish says a Texas trooper and two officers opened fire, killing Martinez.
