CHICAGO (AP) - A rehabilitation hospital in Chicago’s western suburbs is expected to join Northwestern Medicine’s system if regulators grant approval.

Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters announced Thursday they’ve signed a letter of intent about the future of Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital.

The Wheaton-based hospital treats patients recovering from strokes and injuries. Marianjoy has a long-term relationship with Central DuPage Hospital, which recently joined the Northwestern system.

The transfer is part of a broader move by the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters to transfer their health care entities during the first quarter of 2016.

Sister Pat Norton said in a news release the decision is meant to keep the health care entities fiscally sound “as we are aging and our numbers are getting smaller in the United States.”
