PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Dozens of sex offenders have been told they must find a new place to live, following an expansion of the area around schools that’s off-limits to them.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1PY49wI) that police informed the Providence men on Wednesday that they have 30 days to move.
Many of them have lived quietly in neighborhoods for years and are checked on by police and probation officers.
Since 2008, they’ve been prohibited from living within 300 feet of schools. In June, state lawmakers expanded that ban to 1,000 feet for sex offenders deemed most likely to offend.
The newspaper says the expansion leaves just a few slivers of the city open for offenders to reside.
Experts say the expanded ban could backfire, forcing offenders to move frequently or become homeless.
