MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - The council has approved an agreement with Union Pacific for quiet zones along the railroad’s north-south line through Mason City.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1UUwPrM ) that the council voted unanimously for the deal Tuesday.

Train horns still will sound at times for safety reasons.

Council member Travis Hickey acknowledged some concerns that the project would require closing the 9th Street Northwest crossing. But he and other council members say the deal’s benefits outweigh its drawbacks.

Council member Alex Kuhn says, “This is the quality-of-life project we need in this town.”
