ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana woman has pleaded guilty to neglect and battery charges stemming from the abuse of her 16-year-old step-granddaughter, who was found malnourished and covered in human waste.

The 54-year-old Anderson woman had been scheduled to stand trial Sept. 29 for her alleged treatment of the girl over whom she was guardian.

But The Herald Bulletin reports (https://bit.ly/1KfYfmR ) the woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to neglect of a dependent, criminal confinement and battery resulting in bodily injury. A judge will sentence her Oct. 12.

Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings says the plea means the victim “doesn’t have to come to court and testify.”

The girl was found in December malnourished, covered in feces and suffering from signs of abuse. Two other people have been charged in the case.
