NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island trust plans on donating $1.5 million to the Preservation Society of Newport County to help build a welcome center at The Breakers.
The society says it has now raised $5.3 million toward its $5.9 million goal for the planned welcome center at the famous mansion.
The center will replace the current tent, vending machine shed, old ticket booth and portable toilets located near the Vanderbilt mansion.
The Newport Daily News reports that the donation on behalf of the Helen D. Buchanan Trust will be the largest one-time cash donation in the history of the society.
The trust was set up after Helen Buchanan died in November 2014. One of Helen’s daughters, a trustee of the society, worked to arrange the contribution.
