NEW YORK (AP) - Former New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn will head a nonprofit that aids homeless women and children.

The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1ijCw65 ) reported Thursday that Quinn will start her position Nov. 2 at Women in Need, known as Win. She replaces Bonnie Stone, who’s retiring.

Quinn tells The Times that Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration appears to be doing the best it can with a homelessness crisis that it “inherited.”

Win houses about 3,900 women and children in 11 shelters. It also helps women with employment, education and other needs.

Quinn left government after losing her 2013 mayoral bid. She’s had a fellowship at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and served as a special adviser on women’s issues to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
