CHANNAHON, Ill. (AP) - A Missouri man is accused in Illinois of falsely claiming he had been abducted after a night out with his co-workers.

Illinois State Police say 32-year-old James Stamer of St. Charles, Missouri, texted and sent social media messages to friends and relatives, saying he was being held against his will early Tuesday in a northbound vehicle on Interstate 55 near the Chicago-area village of Channahon, Illinois. Police say Stamer implored the messages’ recipients to contact authorities.

Police investigated, located the car and found the report to be a hoax perpetrated by Stamer without the driver’s knowledge.

Will County prosecutors charged Stamer on Wednesday with two counts of filing a false report.

Online court records do not show whether Stamer has an attorney.
