The Obama White House criticized Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson Monday for saying that a Muslim should not be elected president.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Mr. Carson’s comments are “entirely inconsistent with the Constitution.”

“Ultimately, there will be consequences” from voters for Mr. Carson’s remarks, Mr. Earnest said.

On NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Mr. Carson said the U.S. should not elected a Muslim president.

“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation,” he said. “I absolutely would not agree with that.”
