CASWELL BEACH, N.C. (AP) - The mayor of a Brunswick County beach town is facing multiple felony charges after prosecutors say he took at least $100,000 from a group set up to navigate coastal improvement projects.

County prosecutors said Tuesday that Caswell Beach Mayor Harry Simmons Jr. was indicted on 18 felony charges including obtaining property by false pretenses from the Brunswick Beach Consortium. Simmons was arrested and held on bond of $1 million.

Multiple media organizations reported fellow Caswell Beach officials stripped him of his powers as mayor when he couldn’t account for how the town’s money to hire a lobbyist was being spent. Simmons said then that his actions were appropriate and he had the authority to spend money as needed, including for him to take several trips to Washington, D.C.
