ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - A standoff between Rockford police and an armed man holed up in a health clinic ended peacefully with the man’s surrender.

Rockford Deputy Police Chief Pat Hoey says the suspect was taken into custody after a nearly four-hour standoff Monday at the Crusader Community Health clinic.

Authorities say the man, whose name hasn’t been released, opened fire when he entered the clinic. Employees and patients evacuated the building as police arrived.

Hoey said the man was contained on the second floor, and communicated with crisis negotiators until he was persuaded to surrender.

Although the suspect had no way of fleeing the clinic, streets in the area of the clinic were closed during the ordeal.
