BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Officials at a western New York college say a student who died while kayaking in New Zealand was a senior from New York City enrolled in a study abroad program.

WGRZ-TV in Buffalo reports (https://on.wgrz.com/1O4MV3o ) that officials at the University at Buffalo say 21-year-old Daniel Hollnsteiner of Staten Island was a business major participating in the college’s student exchange program with Monash University, based in Melbourne, Australia.

Police in New Zealand say a group of 11 students were on a lake kayaking trip arranged by Monash when they were struck by strong winds Friday that swamped their vessels and thrust them into the frigid water.

Nine survived but Hollnsteiner and a 20-year-old student from England died.

Officials at the Buffalo university say counseling services are available for Hollnsteiner’s friends and fellow students.
