SALEM, Va. (AP) - Longtime Salem Museum and Historical Society director John Long is leaving to take on a new role at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford.

At the National D-Day Memorial, Long will serve as director of education. He will oversee education initiatives and a collection of more than 10,000 artifacts. He has administered the Salem museum since 1992.

Long tells The Roanoke Times (https://bit.ly/1PHY1IR ) that he looks forward to hearing the stories of World War II veterans and sharing them at the memorial.

Historical society board member Dave Robbins says the board of directors has formed a search committee to find a new director.
