PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse says he’s trying to pressure the Republican-controlled House of Representatives into passing a transportation bill.
Whitehouse says it won’t be easy because the House seems as governable as “a bag full of rabid ferrets.”
The Democratic senator addressed Rhode Island business leaders Monday.
Whitehouse says he’s publicizing the fact that there will be severe economic consequences if the current authorization for highway projects runs out in late October.
Whitehouse says he’s hoping Speaker John Boehner, who plans to resign, will address transportation funding since the Republican leader can now act without fear of political consequences.
The Senate passed a six-year highway and transit bill in July.
Whitehouse says Rhode Island needs federal funding to rebuild the intersection of routes 6 and 10 at the Providence viaduct.
