KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - An organization is planning for 100 fathers and male mentors to line the sidewalks at a Kalamazoo elementary school next week as children start the academic year.

The Kalamazoo Gazette (https://bit.ly/1Uoox0e ) reports Tuesday’s gathering at Edison Environmental Science Academy is being organized by Mothers of Hope. The group advocates positive change in Kalamazoo neighborhoods.

A news release from the group says the school was chosen in part because of “recent unfortunate events” in the Edison neighborhood. The newspaper says shootings and homicides have happened in the neighborhood recently, including the May 2014 fatal shooting of a 14-year-old student.

Mothers of Hope says the back-to-school idea came from similar events in Atlanta and Hartford, Connecticut. Men who want to participate are asked to arrive by 7:35 a.m. Tuesday.
