HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Hartford man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the stabbing death of his cousin outside their home last year.

The Hartford Courant reports (https://cour.at/1Uw4Y0J ) 29-year-old Edwin Ruiz accepted a plea offer Thursday and is facing 10 years in prison when he’s sentenced Nov. 13. He was initially facing a murder charge but prosecutors say a key witness in the case could no longer testify.

Police said high school sophomore Bryan Salaman was found on the sidewalk outside his home Nov. 2, 2014 with multiple stab wounds to his neck and torso. He died at the hospital.

Witnesses told police 17-year-old Salaman was stabbed during a fight with Ruiz.

Ruiz’s attorney says her client maintains his innocence, but opted for the deal rather than risk a trial and the possibility of life in prison.
