MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexican officials say eight suspected gunmen died after an attempted ambush of police in Mexico’s northern border state of Tamaulipas.

The state government said state police officers came under fire from gunmen hiding in brush Thursday in Las Yescas, a town south of Matamoros, which is across the border from Brownsville, Texas.

They called in police and military reinforcements, and found the bodies and several weapons at the scene.

The area has been the scene of turf battles between the Gulf cartel and other drug gangs.
