BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Boulder officials are proposing a nearly $100,000 settlement with the family of a man who was shot to death by police following a domestic dispute.

The Daily Camera reports (https://goo.gl/ru7E2N ) the $97,500 proposed settlement stemming from the Nov. 24, 2013, death of 41-year-old Michael Habay includes a $1,000 donation to a group that pairs law enforcement with psychiatric professionals. The group helps officers better respond to incidents involving people with mental illness.

An officer shot Habay at his apartment after a neighbor reported he was armed with knives and stabbing things. The officer was cleared of wrongdoing, but Habay’s family filed a lawsuit alleging police overreacted.

Boulder City Attorney Tom Carr says the settlement is a financial decision, and should not reflect on the officers’ response.
