BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say a fire has caused more than $200,000 in damage to the interior of a historic Roman Catholic cathedral in downtown Buffalo.

Buffalo firefighters were called to St. Joseph Cathedral around 6:30 a.m. Friday after a small blaze broke out and damaged several wooden pews. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but not before it caused an estimated $230,000 in damage, mainly from smoke and water.

Fans are being used to clear out the smoke from the church, which serves as the cathedral for the Diocese of Buffalo.

The cathedral’s stained-glass windows are undergoing work but it’s not known yet if that played a role in starting the fire.

The cathedral was completed in the early 1860s.
